Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. New Name: Same Goals

By Susan Laramee, Recruitment Manager
At its recent national meeting the American Dietetic Association (know as “ADA”) announced that on January 1, 2012 it would change its name to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. After 95 years, this name change comes after internal dialogue and discussion, and reflects the “new” ADA with its focus on nutrition and food to improve the health of the American public.
As a past-president of ADA I know what a significant change this is for the members. Debate has taken place for many years regarding the potential impact of a name change, always with the thought of adding “Nutrition”. Past discussions have included issues such as trademarks, legal, marketing, branding, and a host of other concerns including the cost of new stationary. I applaud the current Board of Directors for taking this action to bring the profession into the 21st century. Young members attending the meeting were energized about the future, and long-term members were proud to see the ADA to move forward and embrace nutrition so clearly as part of our identity.

ADA President, Sylvia Escott-Stump explained to the membership “the name Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics promotes the strong science background and expertise of 72,000 members. Nutrition science underpins wellness, prevention and treatment. An academy is a society of learned persons organized to advance science. This term describes our organization and immediately emphasizes the educational strength of our advice and expertise. By adding ‘nutrition’ to our name we communicate our capacity for transitioning nutrition science into healthier lifestyles for everyone. Keeping dietetics supports our history as a food and science based profession. The new name more clearly communicates who we are and what we do”.

While the name changes, the groups award winning website remains the same at www.eatright.org. The colorful Eat Right Logo will remain as part of the Academy’s identify. The mission is unchanged, and while many of the affiliated groups such as the ADA Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education will consider name changes in the near future, the services to member and the public will remain unchanged.

As anyone who has ever attended FNCE knows is was a busy 4 days – rewarding, fun, and energizing!
