The Best Qualified Candidate

By Suzanne Thompson CIR, CDR - Recruitment Manager
Have you been following any of the Sodexo Careers discussions on LinkedIn? I have been following this one since it started: “Sorry to say I have given up on Sodexo” and feel the need to weigh in.
I have been working for Sodexo for 20 years. I have applied for several positions throughout the years and at times, have shared some of the feelings in the discussion comments.  However it wasn’t until I was watching the movie “Toothfairy” with my children that I got it.
Actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays Derek, a hockey player, who doesn’t believe in “What If”.  In one scene, he confronts a child fan who wants his signature. The child tells him that he is the third leading scorer in his division and that he wants to play hockey in the big leagues just like Derek. But Derek’s discouraging advice to the child is that no matter how good you think you are, there is always someone else out there that is better than you.

When it comes to applying for jobs, it can be hard to accept that while you possess the experience needed for a given position, that you may not be the best qualified candidate for the job. Even though you are very good, there is always a possibility that someone else might be better.  As a recruiter, I can say we read each and every resume submitted for a job. As we review resumes we are looking for the best qualified candidates for the partnership between Sodexo and our clients. We have many individuals applying to the positions and we do our best to move the best qualified forward in the process. If you’re not selected, don’t give up. There may be another position out there that will be an even better match for your skills and experience.
To find that best match for you, I encourage you to stay positive about searching for jobs at Sodexo, but be realistic.
  • Read the job description and make sure it’s the right job for your skill set and education. Post only to those jobs that match your qualifications.
  • Ensure your resume includes specific examples of your experiences related to the job for which you are applying and that they are displayed prominently.
  • During your interview, be prepared to talk about examples of how you’ve managed responsibilities similar to those expected in the job for which you are interviewing.
  • Continue to develop your skills (written, verbally and technical) to increase your chances of being the best qualified candidate for the job.
  • Network with Sodexo recruiters and managers by joining our talent communities found on our “Network with Us” page.
These 20 years have been amazing for me but there have always been challenges when competing for my next position.  That is probably true of any organization.  Like me, you will succeed if you remember to believe in yourself, take the time to prepare and don’t give up on Sodexo.

Great post Suzanne. And in the end, believe in yourself. Stay positive. Stay motivated. And do your best to prove you are the best qualified for the job. If you're interviewing for the role, chances are the company sees potential. Let your light shine!

I appreciate the need to find the "best qualified candidate" and fully understand the frustration on both sides--recruiter and applicant. I think some of the frustration on the job searchers end comes from not knowing where they fell short; recruiters don't often cough up that information even when asked. The other is the length of time it takes from job posting through applying, interview and selection and NOT being notified of the final outcome. It would be great if companies took the time to send out an email blast to those applicants who applied but weren't selected. Give them a clue.

I agree with Anoymous. I have interviewed three times with Sodexo and have gotten down to the finals twice. My recruiting contact did not even give me the courtesy of following up on what I could have done better or even why they did not choose me. It is very discouraging when you do not get feedback in a timely manner.
I will keep trying because I believe I have much to offer as far as Business Development.
