Sodexo and the U.S. government, a hire aspiration

by Arie Ball, VP, Sourcing and Talent Acquisition.

Quick – name three things that Sodexo has in common with the U.S. government. Stumped? Let’s start with the fact that we are both very large, decentralized organizations serving thousands of locations across the United States. Next, we’re both interested in hiring top talent to serve the American people on our front lines. And third … we both want to be innovators in employee recruitment.

Did you know government agencies across the country employ roughly 2.1 million civilian employees?  To attract the talent pool necessary to fill all of those jobs takes some real innovation, especially in keeping up with hiring trends. But what’s even more exciting is that President Obama wants the American people to think it’s flat out cool to work in government. Why? To attract the best possible talent.

Through the Hiring Reform initiative of March 2010, President Obama challenged the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to develop flexible, results-oriented HR policies and to change the way Americans perceive government work. His goal is simple – to attract and retain dynamic, innovative employees who put serving the American people at the heart of everything they do. This is much like how we operate at Sodexo, where patients, residents in senior living communities, K-12 and college students and many others are the focus of everything we do.
As such, the OPM team began to seek input from Sodexo and other private sector companies to share information about our culture, hiring practices and recruitment strategies. What an honor! I am so thrilled that Sodexo is part of this process and we can share what we’ve learned about recruiting top talent with the government of one of the greatest nations ever. We couldn’t be more proud to contribute to this hiring reform initiative that is so important for the U.S. government and our effectiveness as a country. Now, more than ever, with the global nature of our world we need the best of the best in all facets of our government.

Being Hire Minded … and Cool
One of the greatest challenges in recruiting today is being able to effectively reach out to our next generation of leaders. The U.S. government is working hard to cut out some of the red tape that makes it difficult to keep candidates interested. The end goal is clear: hire the best and strongest leaders for the future of our country. There’s no way around it – that’s pretty cool!
On Aug. 24, Kerry Noone and I will present at OPM on Effective Uses of Social Media in Recruiting to HR professionals across the federal government, sharing our lessons learned. Given that President Obama was the first president to use social media as a critical communication tool in his election campaign, it’s only fitting that we at Sodexo will talk about how social media plays a significant role in recruiting.

During my conversations with the federal HR community, I’ll share our strategies for using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr and YouTube to attract candidates and build relationships with them. But I’ll also talk about the need for watching trends and learning about new technologies that will be developed. While the Sodexo Careers blog and all of our other networking opportunities have helped us build vibrant talent pools today, there may be new and more preferred ways to reach candidates in the future. Being hire minded means embracing change.
I am so excited to collaborate on Hiring Reform for the U.S. government. It’s an incredible privilege to share strategies that aim to hire top talent for the coolest government on Earth. Hiring future leaders is one of the greatest honors for recruiting professionals – both in the corporate world and for the government. It is truly our hire aspiration. After all, our future depends on it.
