Earthquakes and Hurricanes

Like many on the East Coast, Maryland was not only hit by an earthquake in the last seven days but also a hurricane.  Hurricanes (or tropical storms) in Maryland are rare but not as rare as Earthquakes.  I will admit I was excited to be able to experience such a powerful force of nature the afternoon the earthquake hit.  I was also scared… even a little 5.9 earthquake can rock your world – pun intended.  I was also very aware of the devastations that have hit Japan, Haiti and Thailand in the last several years.

Saturday Hurricane Irene rolled into town with a fierce strength.  I was glued to The Weather Channel Saturday night wondering if we were going to really see the devastation Jim Cantore and colleagues were warning us about.  Around 8 o’clock Saturday night our power went out and it’s been out ever since.
As I sit in my office pieced together with a power cord and a generator I am thankful.  Thankful because with two potential natural disasters behind me the people I love are safe.  Thankful because my husband is a crafty fella and somehow he has connected our generator to our refrigerator and hot water heater.  Who cares if we can’t turn on the lights or use the internet?  We have food, we can take hot showers, and we are safe.

I realized this morning it’s not just the little things that I take for granted.  I take EVERYTHING for granted.  The earthquake and hurricane were reminders to fully appreciate every moment possible and look at every situation as an opportunity.  Revisiting my life bucket list might be a good start to get me back on track.
One of the items on my list is to find a mentor.  Luckily this one is easy.  Recently I applied to Sodexo’s IMPACT leadership development mentor program.  Not only is it an honor to be invited to apply, it’s an excellent opportunity grow your career with Sodexo.  More than 200 Sodexo managers come together each year for IMPACT. Mentoring partnerships are formed at the annual event. Mentors serve as a resource for their mentees as they work to achieve their goals.
Also on my bucket list, though not in the top ten,  is to learn how to throw and catch a football.  What about you? What’s on your bucket list?
