National Health Care Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week is a time recognized by the American Hospital Association to acknowledge the contribution of the environmental services and housekeeping teams through out the US.
Sodexo kicks off National Environmental Services week 2010 as we did last year with a series of guest blog posts from our Health Care team. Today we welcome the first of four guest bloggers, Lydia Moriarity-Flynn CHESP, DM in Health Care in the Midwest who would like to send a "proud shout out" to our environmental services and housekeeping teams on behalf of the entire Sodexo Health Care team!
To all of our Environmental Services/Housekeeping professionals we applaud your accomplishments and want to express our deepest thanks for 'making every day a better day' for our patients, residents, families and staff - not just September 12-18, but all year long!

Happy ES Week!
By Guest Blogger, Lydia Moriarity-Flynn CHESP, DM in Health Care in the Midwest
I've worked in Health Care for more than 30 years, 16 of them with Sodexo. When I began my nursing career 30 years ago, housekeepers were invisible to the caregivers. Housekeepers were expected to do the job of cleaning and not disturb the patient, family or clinicians.
But so much has changed! And, I'm pleased to be a witness to the evolution of the Environmental Services profession from “maid service” to contributor to the “patient experience.”
The industry first acknowledged the influence the Housekeeper has on the patient when we provided the Housekeeper with a script. We taught the Housekeeper what to say to the patient and family. But at Sodexo, we realized that the script sounded scripted. We now empower our staff to engage those they meet; patient, family, co-workers. Providing a safe and clean environment is only the beginning of the services offered by today’s Housekeeper.Housekeepers at Sodexo have been known to sing with, pray with and cry with patients, take action when the patient is in distress, offer a card, a gift and a warm smile to cheer the patient and family. They strive to 'make everyday a better day' for those they work with and care for. And, I am proud to salute and honor Housekeepers during their special week.
Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those you serve everyday.
