Keeping an Eye on Tomorrow

On our way to swim team the other day my son asked me if the sun was going to burn out. My response was, "No bud, that'll never happen - at least not while you or I am alive."

But the conversation stayed with me that day because, you know what? I really did not have a clue if the sun would ever burn out or not. And if it could burn out, it might not be in my life time or my son's life time but could it be during my grandchildren's or my son's grandchildren's life time?

So I Googled it. As it turns out (according to
WikiAnswers) like any fire on Earth, the sun can't go on "burning" forever. And, long story short, eventually the sun will start to "fuse the helium nuclei until the only thing left is gaseous iron," and the sun will eventually die.

But not for another 5 billion years. So I think we're "safe."

Safe from the sun burning out maybe but not-so-safe from other environmental questions and concerns. Do you remember in April when I confessed I've always wanted to be a radio star? Well, this month I wish I was an environmentalist or a scientist... so I could speak a little more intelligently about the effects the tragedy in the Gulf will have on the environment.

Every night I sit with my children and we watch the evening news (@KatieCouric is our favorite) and every night since that day in April, they've asked the same questions. Why? Why did this happen? Why hasn't it stopped. And what? What does this mean? What is going to happen to the birds, the fish, the people?

All I can say to them is, "I don't know." So yes, this month I wish I was an environmentalist so I could answer these questions with a little more intelligence.

Today, Sodexo Careers and Jobs in Pods released our second
Career Cast and appropriately so the topic is Sodexo's commitment to sustainability. It's an important topic for Sodexo - it's at the core of our business. Rachel Fineberg Sylvan, Director, Sustainability & CSR Engagement and Suzanne Davis, Executive Recruiter were our guests for this episode and it features Sodexo's sustainability initiatives including our Better Tomorrow Plan and how sustainability influences our recruiting. You can listen here.

And in all of my helplessness and with all of the unanswered questions from my children this past month, it feels good to work for a company who cares about making
tomorrow a better place for my grandchildren and my children's grandchildren.
