March - in like a lion...

Just as February went by like the speed of lightning for me so did the first week of March. In Maryland, we were hit with our first "snow storm" leaving most of us wondering when spring would come and thankful we've avoided the record amounts of snow elsewhere in the US this winter. And by the end of the week, we were enjoying spring temperatures here. For the first time, this winter I think I understood what so many people have told me in the past about the winter blues. It was a long and cold winter with nightly news reports of our dismal economy. Am I the only one who feels spring is for new beginnings? As the weather starts to warm so will our moods and our motivation and it's a good thing because March is going to be a another busy month for this blog.

March is National Nutrition Month and the theme is, "Eat Right." It's spring and with spring (and warmer weather) comes motivation. Are you a healthy eater? National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association. According to their web site the campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Sodexo is the largest private employer of Registered Dietitians in the country. Registered Dietitian Day, also celebrated in March, increases awareness of registered dietitians and recognizes RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives. Registered Dietitian Day is March 11 - if you know a Registered Dietitian congratulate them for all of their hard work and dedication to their profession.

Not only is it National Nutrition Month it's also Women's History Month. And, just as we celebrated Black History Month with guest blog posts from a few of Sodexo's African American leaders, we'll be doing the same this month to celebrate National Women's History Month. Yesterday was actually International Women's Day. Unfortunately, I read that this morning. If I had known I certainly would not have spent my day cleaning my house. I would have met my girl friends for lunch and enjoyed my female friendships or invited my mother who is also my role model to dinner or better yet I would have talked to my 9 year old daughter about her future as a potential leader for her generation.

According to The National Trust for Historic Preservation website, the celebration of women’s history has its origins in the International Women's Day, first celebrated in Europe on March 8, 1911. In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County, California, Commission on the Status of Women began a "Women's History Week" celebration that coincided with International Women's Day. In 1980, President Carter issued a Presidential Message supporting this celebration of the accomplishments of women. In 1981, the United States Congress passed a resolution declaring a National Women’s History Week. In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March. Congress has issued a resolution for celebration of Women’s History Month every year since then.

To recognize Women's History Month, we've invited 3 female Sodexo leaders to tell their story on this blog. You can help us celebrate by sharing your story too. Are you proud of your accomplishments or would you like to recognize someone who has inspired you?
