Today I have a little bit of third grade math for you...
Scott and Lauren are making a brick path in the school garden. Scott places 6 rows of bricks with 2 bricks in each row. Lauren places 4 rows of bricks with 3 bricks in each row. Scott turns to Lauren and says, "Look! This is what we learned in math today. We're using the Commutative Property of Multiplication." Lauren disagrees.
Who is right?
Well? Who is correct? And do you know why?
Are you wondering why I am blogging about third grade math?
I am not embarrassed to admit (OK maybe I am a little embarrassed) that I had to look up on the internet what the Commutative Property of Multiplication and this is not the first night that I had to resort to the internet to help my third grade daughter with her math homework. My point is learning never ends.
The process of gaining knowledge and learning should never end. Education is a continuous effort to prepare ourselves for challenges and our dynamic work (and personal) environments in order to progress in our careers and lives. It should not come as a surprise to learn that Sodexo has it's own University. Sodexo University offers diverse learning opportunities specially designed to help employees succeed and grow. In fact, I am headed to our headquarters office in Gaithersburg, MD for a Spirit of Diversity course this Thursday. This training is designed to heighten awareness, build skills and provide tools for managing within a diverse workforce. The course will provide practical skills for respecting and recognizing the talents of every employee and is designed to develop knowledge of diversity and inclusion and Sodexo’s commitment to them as well as to clarify and enhance understanding of the business case for diversity and inclusion at Sodexo.
This is just one of many courses Sodexo University offers employees and through the University, we have access to a variety of learning opportunities specially designed to help us give our best to our clients and customers. Experts from each Sodexo business line contributes to the learning tools and the courses are designed for all Sodexo employees. Some of the classes are self-study, some are instructor-led classes, and some are online. In other words, they make it easy for us to continue learning.
Aside from the learning aspect of the course that I'm taking on Thursday, making sure all Sodexo employees understand and practice Sodexo's commitment to diversity and inclusion is just one of the reasons we have been on Diversity Inc.'s Top 50 Companies List for Diversity list since 2004, has moved up one spot each of the last three years to #12 this year.
BTW - if you didn't know and are wondering who is correct in my third grade math question above. Lauren is. The commutative property for multiplication is a lot like addition; the order that we multiply the numbers doesn't matter, the answer is the same. If Lauren had placed 2 rows of 6 bricks each Scott would have been correct.
(Right?)
